Are you failing miserably at house breaking your puppy?

It can be a drag house breaking puppies. If you’re in the middle of the process you know what I mean. Having a new puppy or dog is a pleasure, but not always. One of the first things you need to learn is to potty train your puppy.

That’s not to say it’s necessarily all that hard, just that it can be if you don’t know what you’re doing.

And if you get it wrong the results can be disastrous for your puppy, for you and for your family. House training a puppy correctly is a must.

And of course not everyone starts with a puppy, there are some people who, through various circumstances, end up with a full grown dog that needs house training. Again it’s not all that hard to potty train a full grown dog – provided you know what you’re doing.

I’m short of space here to give you all the steps for house breaking puppies and dogs, and I like to keep those secrets for my website. But there’s a few points that I can make about it.

First, always remember that you’re the boss dog. Your dog or puppy expects you to set the rules of the house and he is prepared to follow them if you teach them correctly. Teaching them correctly doesn’t involve punishing him for any infraction of the rules.

But regardless of this you need to be quite consistent in setting the rules and explaining them to him and training him to respect them.

Instead of punishing your dog for a breach of the rules you need to use positive reinforcement. In the past it the accepted wisdom was to show him the rules, for example where his potty place was, then punish him for every breach till he got it right. This can take a long time and subject you both to a lot of stress.

And be prepared to do whatever it takes to successfully train your puppy or dog. Every puppy is different, just like kids are different. Some will get the message quite fast and if you use the correct methods to train him will be successfully trained in no time. Others will take quite a while. Understand that it’s a process that you and your puppy need to go through that, even if you are doing everything right, will take as long as it takes.

Expect it to take a while, be happy if it doesn’t rather than the other way round.

House breaking a puppy is a procedure. You need to learn the right procedure then follow it for as long as it takes for your puppy to get it. Be consistent, don’t punish, keep the training up and every puppy can be house trained.

It’s as much about you as him. You must know exactly what you are doing before starting, and stick at it. Find out much more on my website.
