Shar Pei grooming: A step by step guide

It is easy to tell when you see a Shar Pei. They are absolutely gorgeous dogs, whose most distinctive characteristic is the wrinkly folds of skin that cover their body. If you have a Shar Pei and want to keep them looking and feeling their very best, then it is going to be imperative that you perform proper and regular grooming.

Shar Pei grooming takes a lot of time, so before you even get started make sure that you are ready and that you are going to have the patience that is going to be required. You also need to keep in mind that the Shar Pei’s skin is predisposed to numerous conditions and therefore some preventive care is in order, of which you will want to take care of before actually getting started on the grooming.

Before you begin Shar Pei grooming you will need to determine what particular type of coat they have. The Chinese Shar Pei comes in two varieties after all, and there are differences in the coat although both are short and harsh. Brushing is one of the most important aspects of all when it comes to Shar Pei grooming. You want to brush their coat at least a couple times a week, and more during shedding season.

You should remove any shed hair with a rubber brush while you are bathing your dog, and then you always want to dry the folds of the dog’s skin thoroughly after giving them a bath. This will ensure that there is not water left in between the folds. Apply baby powder in the folds of the skin after drying, and then if you want you can spray the dog’s coat with a light gloss spray for a nice sheen, just to make them look their very best.

The best idea is to start grooming your Shar Pei when it is a puppy. Not only will this ensure that they look as good as they can from early on, but also makes sure that they get accustomed to it and enjoy it rather than having it be more of a chore.

Shar Pei dogs are loyal, loving and friendly dogs. They are truly stunning as long as they are well taken care of, and more than anything this relates to grooming. If you ever do not feel comfortable with any part of the grooming process or you find that you just don’t have the time to get it all done, then keep in mind that you can always bring your dog in to the veterinarian and have them take care of it for you.
